When it comes to topics of a spiritual caliber, most Christians are open to talk about everything and anything. Especially those who are maturing followers of Christ. However, what spiritual topic do you think most Christians hope that their non-Christian friends will never bring up? Could it be the topic of hell? Or how about the Bible and its authority? Though these are obviously difficult questions for some to answer, these are not however “The Question(s)” that most Christians hope that their non-Christian friends will ask them.
According to a recent study conducted by the Barna Research Group, after asking and surveying over 1000 Christians, the number one question that most Christians choose and hope not to answer is, “How Do You Know For Sure That There Is A God?” How would you personally answer this question? Would you truly answer it if asked of you? Or would you call your pastor and ask him to call your friend to answer it for you? Unsurprisingly, most Christians when asked this question respond with, “You got to have faith.” Would this be an adequate response in your book? Or is this a quick “band-aid” to try to skirt the issue and the fact that you possibly got stumped and put in a corner with a question as this?
This is why for skeptics, atheists, agnostics and the like, that “science” begins to make the most sense to them because it seems to have the “answers” by way of using technology, biology and scientific experiments. Most people are not necessarily looking for the answer to be “God”, they are merely looking for answers. Any answer. Is the Bible truly the word of God? Did a supreme being (God) create the heavens and the earth? Is Jesus Christ truly God in the flesh? If all these things Christians claim to be true, than can they answer as to how they know for sure that there is a God?
These are questions that we as followers in Christ must answer or at least know how to answer. People are asking, and people want to know the truth. If we are to be a reflection of the Son of God, and we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is real, we must show Jesus through our lives, actions, reactions and in our speech! If people want to know for sure that there is a God, they must see God in us! He lives and resides in us!
I challenge you to begin to establish a relationship with a skeptic, atheist, agnostic, etc. Remember, we’re not debating anyone into heaven, we are loving them to the feet of Jesus. I challenge you to take this question and truly ask yourself how you would personally answer it. Will you decline? Shy away? Or for the Gospel’s sake will you take this question head on and answer? As pastor Peter exhorts us “15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” -1 Peter 3:15
